National Australia Bank has overtaken Commonwealth Bank as the major bank with the highest retail customer satisfaction rating, a position it last held in 2012.

According to the latest Roy Morgan Research consumer banking customer satisfaction report, NAB's rating increased by 80 basis points in June taking it to 82.6 per cent.

The other three big banks lost ground in June. CBA's ratings slipped 10 bps to 82.4 per cent, Westpac's fell 60 bps to 80.7 per cent and ANZ's fell 20 bps to 78.9 per cent.

Roy Morgan industry communications director Norman Morris said home loan customers had driven gains in satisfaction levels for the Big Four over the past year, particularly NAB.

NAB's home loan customers gave the bank a 74.6 per cent satisfaction rating in June last year and a rating of 81.8 per cent a year later - an increase of 7.2 percentage points.

Morris said: "The decline in home loan interest rates over the last 12 months appears to have resulted in improved customer satisfaction levels among home loan customers of the Big Four, which in turn has driven up overall satisfaction."
