ANZ is winning deposit business, if the monthly APRA series is presenting an accurate picture.

ANZ is the leader in deposit growth from households among the big four over one, two, three, six, nine, 12 and 24 months.

This is a creditable performance but needs to be seen in context. ANZ could have twice the deposit book in Australia and still trail CBA.

Mandy Simpson, general manager deposits for ANZ, listed a series of reasons for the bank's leading deposit growth.

Product design, convenience, simplicity and safety were four themes suggested.

So too a series of business initiatives such as term deposits and online savings accounts, including the SmartyPig brand.

Simpson said ANZ's retail online saver account increased by $5.5 billion over the last six months and the business version, launched in December 2008, reached $3 billion in just six months.

More discrete ideas may be gaining traction.

She cited the Business Select Transaction package, which has sold around 5000 packages in a few months. This product bundle covers a business transaction account, business credit card, merchants, internet banking for business, and other business needs plus a consumer transaction account (for personal needs) all with one fee.
