Bankruptcies mapped by postcode

Ian Rogers
Personal bankruptcies are most abundant in the outer suburbs of Sydney and Brisbane, and also in regional Queensland cities, a new report from the Insolvency and Trustee Service of Australia shows. The report covers the 2011 financial year.

One surprise in the data might be the regional areas of Queensland that stand out in the data (which is provided by ITSA on a total per postcode and not on a per capita basis).

East Toowoomba (where Heritage Bank is headquartered) and Bundaberg (where Wide Bay Australia is based) are two Queensland postcodes with high levels of bankruptcy. Mackay, another regional city where Wide Bay is represented, Hervey Bay, Robina, Logan and Ipswich also have high levels of bankruptcy.

Elsewhere in Australia those postcodes with high levels of bankruptcy tend to overlap with places already known for high levels of home loan arrears.

They include several suburbs in Campbelltown, Mount Druitt and Penrith in Sydney; Frankston in Victoria, Mandurah in West Australia and Salisbury in South Australia.
