Deposit insurance supported by Coalition

A deposit insurance scheme would likely be introduced by a Liberal and National Coalition government along the same lines as that proposed earlier this month by the Labor Government.

While not mentioned specifically by Joe Hockey, the shadow treasurer, in a budget costings document released yesterday he did say that "whilst we do not like many of the savings initiatives announced by the [Labor] Government [four weeks ago] we must proceed with the budget bottom line savings."

This includes the deposit insurance scheme at 0.05 percentage points on insured deposits up to A$250,000 under the Financial Claims Scheme, with a starting date for the scheme of January 2016.

The Council of Financial Regulators has recommended this scheme.
