Smartpay hit by cyber attack

Payment terminal supplier Smartpay has suffered a “ransomware cyber incident” that resulted in the theft of information relating to a group of customers in Australia and New Zealand.

The company reported on Friday that the attack, which was discovered on June 10, affected some of its systems in New Zealand.

Following discovery of the incident, Smartpay engaged cyber security specialists CyberCX and notified relevant government authorities.

“Understanding the content and extent of that data theft is now the highest priority of our investigation,” Smartpay chief executive Martyn Pomeroy said in a statement.

Pomeroy said the company does not collect or store individual cardholder information as part of its transaction processing.

At the end of March, Smartpay had 15,7000 terminals deployed in Australia and 31,000 in New Zealand. It claims a 6.3 per cent share of the Australian payment terminal market.

It said customers can continue to use its payment terminals and platforms as usual.

“Although there is nothing our customers need to do at this time, our people will be in touch with any customers directly if they may be impacted by the incident,” Pomeroy said.
